Q: Where is the District Building located?

A. The Boothbay Harbor Sewer District office is located at 27 Sea Street in Boothbay Harbor. .

Q: What’s the difference between a special district and an independent special district?

A: Special districts, like school districts, have certain autonomies but they are essentially functions of the Town’s they serve. Independent special districts are a form of local government created by the Maine Legislature to provide one or a limited number of designated functions.  Sewer collection and treatment services are the designated functions of the Boothbay Harbor Sewer District.

Q: Is the District part of the Towns of Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor?

A: No. The District is a separate legal entity that was created in 1959 by the State of Maine. Because of this, the District does not utilize and tax dollars from the Towns. The District operates solely on sewer use fees.

Q: How often does the Board of Directors meet?

A: The Board of Directors meets on the first and third Monday of every month at the District office. The meetings begin at 5:00 p.m. and are open to the public.

Q: How long does each Director serve on the Board?

A: Each Trustee is elected by residents of the District to serve a three-year term.  There are no term limits to serving on the Board and elections are held annually.

Q: Does the Board of Directors receive a salary?

A: Pursuant to the provisions of the District’s charter, each Board member is eligible to receive an annual stipend up to $1,000.00 per year.

Q: What is the District service area?

A. The Boothbay Harbor Sewer District services the communities of Boothbay Harbor and parts of Boothbay. Squirrel Island and Capital Island (Southport, ME) are served via inter-municipal agreements.
